My weekend In Marfa with El Cosmico

As soon as I booked my trip to El Cosmico, my boyfriend and I hopped in Posh (my British Flag covered Mini Cooper) and sped off towards Marfa, Texas. We spent six hours in the car eating pretzels, singing 90's music at the top of our lungs, admiring the mountains, and playing this really fun (I am being sarcastic here) game entitled, "What if this ends up being like The Hills Have Eyes?"

We were nervous about what we would find in this tiny Texas town, but as soon as we passed the deep blue "Welcome to Marfa" sign, all of our worries melted away.

The most noticeable aspect of Marfa is the size of the city. Marfa is small. In fact, the police station has a for sale sign in the window. There are not many people that live in Marfa, but everyone that does occupy this city is beautiful and colorful, making the city's culture blossom with creativity and diversity.

The most enchanting place in Marfa is El Cosmico. El Cosmico is a resort that makes you sleep in oversized teepees, handcrafted yurts, and restored trailers from the 1960's.

At midnight on the first night of our arrival we were buzzing with excitement and had no hopes of sleeping. We spilled out of our teepee and immediately lost our breath when we saw the vast array of stars strewn throughout the night sky. We danced under the twinkling lights until we were in desperate need of an ice cream break at the nearest laundry mat. That's the thing about Marfa, it's unique, they don't do things like the rest of the world.

We spent our mornings at El Cosmico snuggled up in a one of a kind yurt or teepee, and our afternoons lounging in the hammock field. At nights, El Cosmico had live performances on the stage near the reception area, where bands from Seattle, Oregon, and Austin would play folksy tunes.

It is a vacation that makes you forget about the real world. For a while, you are stuck in a Marfa bubble filled with yurts, sand, stars, and alien sightings.  It is a vacation that never lasts long enough and always stays in the back of your mind, resurfacing randomly when you are driving to work or reading a book in bed at night.

El Cosmico is the ideal bohemian getaway. It is the perfect place to leave behind your normal life for a few days to act wild and free out in the desert. I know that I will be back very soon.
